Mouhamed Ndao, left, Sadio Deh and Samba Thiam watched TV outside Dakar, Senegal, where @kostyukov photographed the migrant community earlier this week. All across Africa, the treacherous journey to Europe often begins in houses like this one — an in-between spot for men who have left their families to look for work but are not yet desperate enough to cross the sea. Samba, 23 — who moved to Dakar from his village nearly 400 miles away to look for a job — lost his brother, whose boat capsized on his way across the Mediterranean. “I’m quite sure if he would have made it to Europe, our life would have changed,” said Samba, 23. But rather than making Samba decided against making the trip, his brother’s death has actually made him more likely to set off. “If I don’t get a job,” he said, “I will take the risk and do the same.”
