Photo by: Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | This remarkable 100 acre former WWI underground city lies beneath a picturesque farm in the Picardy region of France. It’s a place where one can literally touch the past. Time has stood still. It’s as if WWI ended yesterday. My friends call this “The Kitchen”. One hundred years ago, it was a food preparation and serving area for the hundreds if not thousands of soldiers that found shelter here, while the battle raged above ground. Look closely. You will see a live canon shell, a live rocket grenade, a shoe, a lantern, an ammunition box, barbed wire cutters, cooking pans, leather straps, drinking cups and more. Just out of view to the right are hundreds of wine bottles lying about. Around the corner was a telecommunications center where underground combat occurred. It’s remarkable that so many hidden traces exist from World War One . . . far more than can be found from World War Two.
