We had to visit the absolutely incredible Bristlecone pine tree forest, home to some of the oldest living organisms on earth, when visiting Great Basin. However, the roads up to Wheeler peak, where the Bristlecone trail starts, were not yet cleared from the winter snow. The trail starts at an elevation of over 10,000 feet, so the fact that it was still under four feet of snow in May was no real surprise. So, rather than driving to Wheeler Peak, we strapped on some snowshoes and hiked. It was a pretty epic day, hiking about 11 miles most of which was above 10,000 feet and on top of four feet of snow. To say we did a lot of route finding (or more to the point, no route finding) would be an understatement. We had the trail to ourselves and it was absolutely grand. And yes, we did reach the ancient 3000 to 4000 year old Bristlecones, and it was worth every bit of the effort (but that's for another post).
