Military personnel read from letters during part of a military-led vigil for the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme at the Thiepval Memorial in Thiepval, France, where more than 70,000 British and Commonwealth servicemen with no known graves are commemorated. The battle began on July 1, 1916 and lasted until Nov. 18, 1916. It was one of the bloodiest battles of the First World War, with more than one million wounded or killed.
