Badlands National Park, photographed here by @clydebutcher. The @nationalparkservice turns 100 in August, and to celebrate the centennial milestone, @nytimestravel asked 5 writers to recount times when a national park left a mark on their lives. The writer @cherylstrayed, the author of “Wild” and “Brave Enough,” tells the tale of her up-close encounter with a bison in @badlandsnps. “It was 1994, before selfies and cellphones — but not before people were idiots in the wild,” @cherylstrayed writes. When the writer, who was camping in Sage Creek, stepped out of her tent in the morning, she spotted a bison grazing about 50 feet from her. @cherylstrayed’s response: “Good morning, Mr. Buffalo,” which had the undesired effect of causing the largest terrestrial animal in North America to circle her tent for a number of minutes. Visit the link in our profile to read more about @cherylstrayed’s animal encounter and to see more of @clydebutcher’s photos of @nationalparkservice scenes. #NPS100
