#DouglasJames was influential for like-minded artist #StephenPowers. Powers explains, “Douglas James came of age in Detroit in the late sixties. He was the son of a factory worker, his inheritance a city engulfed in protests and riots, sound tracked by John Lee Hooker and the MC5. [...] rather than continuing on the well-lit fine art track to Manhattan, he went back to the darkened streets of the Motor City. There he found a community of like minds in the Cass Corridor and made this painting that, in the rearview mirror, looks like Blue Collar Pop.” See it on view in the ever-expanding rotunda installation, Coney Island Is Still Dreamland (To a Seagull) through Aug 21.
