Photo by Kevin Schafer @schaferpho, @ナショナルジオグラフィック – A decade ago, I spent a magical week on remote Talan Island, home to a major seabird colony in the little-known Sea of Okhotsk of the Russian Far East. One of the most striking things about Talan was the vast numbers of Crested Auklets, these clown-like cousins of the puffin. At dusk every evening (near midnight in midsummer) great swarms of them would return to the island in undulating clouds, some containing hundreds of thousands of birds. Today, however, the cliffs of Talan have fallen nearly silent; breeding success for several seasons has been almost zero, and the clouds of birds have all but vanished. As a Russian ornithologist friend in Magadan put it, “something is wrong in the ocean.” I am waiting now for reports from scientists on the island this summer, but even those will only reveal the scale of the catastrophe, not explain it. Typically seabird crashes like this are the result of changes in sea temperatures, which affect the availability of the bird’s critical prey species.
