In Norman Sicily, many buildings were a synthesis of Western, Islamic and Byzantine traditions. They were decorated with motifs shared across the Mediterranean, such as peacocks, lions and the Tree of Life.

Two peacocks flank a heavily stylised Tree of Life on this enamelled casket lid, made shortly after the Norman period. Peacocks were one of the symbols shared by different cultures around the Mediterranean and frequently appeared in many types of art including ceramics, mosaics and paintings. The scene on this enamel plaque is almost identical to a mosaic scene in the Norman Palace in Palermo. To both Christians and Muslims, peacocks were inhabitants of Paradise and represented immortality. They were also amongst the exotic animals that roamed the palace gardens in Palermo.

Find out more about this cultural centre of the ancient and medieval in our #SicilyExhibition, until 14 August 2016.
