This week we’re highlighting some of the incredible clocks and watches on display in the Museum. Our Clocks and Watches Gallery (Rooms 38-39) tells the story from their invention in western Europe to today’s mass production.

This beautiful detail from a masterpiece clock made in Germany was captured by @itk_jpn. The clock was made in Augsburg by Thomas Starck in 1620. The spectacular dial shows the time and has a circle engraved with the Dominical Letter – used for finding the day of the week. It also shows saints’ days and feast days. The dragon hand indicates when eclipses are most likely to occur. In the centre, moving shutters show the length of day and night through the year.
