Naegi, Gifu-ken: X marks the Yamashita family home where my father spent his youth. My "furusato," or home village has recently become a tourist attraction due to the opening of the Naegi Castle ruins located at the top of Mt. Takamori, less than 5 minutes from our home. Coming down the mountain after photographing, it suddenly hit me - my family were Samurai serving the Lord of the castle and the name Yamashita (which means "under the mountain") came from the location of our house at the bottom of the hill, as Japanese often took their surnames from their house location during the Meiji period.
