Photo by @FransLanting: One day I peered down into a clear lagoon in the Okavango Delta and noticed how a patch of water lilies was anchored in desert sand. An idea took hold. I slipped in and sank to the bottom. Looking up, I saw that the lilies symbolized the essential wonder of the delta: This great wetland, with its abundance of life, is really just a thin sheet of water stretched across Kalahari sand. Water lilies are among the oldest lineages of flowering plants, dating back nearly 140 million years. This is one of the signature images for my project “LIFE: A Journey Through Time,” which we produced as a multimedia symphony that features my images and the music of Philip Glass. LIFE is a lyrical interpretation of the story of life on Earth, from the Big Bang to the present. The LIFE symphony has been staged around the world and for its 10th anniversary, it will be performed at Chicago’s Grant Park Music Festival on July 20, 2016.
