An #aerial view of the Los Amigos River in an isolated area of Madre de Dios, Peru. It’s estimated that 400 tons of mercury have been dumped into rivers and the air by illegal miners working in the area. Now, in an effort to protect one of the most biologically diverse places on earth, the Peruvian government is setting up outposts and stepping up raids. But some experts wonder whether it is far too little too late. Unlicensed miners have collected more gold in Peru than anywhere else in Latin America. They use use so much mercury to process the gold that, in May, the government declared a health emergency in much of the Madre de Dios region. Environmentalists worry that even a remote reserve like this one has little chance of survival. Visit the link in our profile to read more and to see more photographs by Tomas Munita.
