Beeswax, steel, gunpowder, soap, fur, race cars, and…chocolate? @Hirshhorn conservators have pioneered new techniques for the long-term preservation of challenging materials used by artists.
Conservators have to think about the changing temperatures in the gallery, how strong the lightbulbs are, and sometimes they work directly with living artists to problem-solve.
Janine Antoni cast two busts of herself for "Lick and Lather" (1994), an artwork that blurs the line between sculpture and performance art. Antoni sculpted the unique self-portrait by licking the chocolate bust and bathing with the soap bust. The goal of the piece was to highlight the relationship that we have with our own appearance.??
