After it crashed on Sólheimasandur beach in the middle of a November night in 1973, this DC plane was mostly forgotten about. Once the crew were all safely rescued the US Navy made no efforts to recover what was left of the aircraft, and so ever since it’s been decomposing here in the black sands. But over the last few years it’s slowly become a tourist attraction after it was featured in a number of music videos and a Bollywood movie. Then @ジャスティン・ビーバー skateboarded on it and it went viral. Now, hundreds of people follow the GPS coordinates to a remote, unmarked gate on the side of the road and trek four kilometres through a barren lava desert to see what remains of the crash. But It’s also becoming one of Iceland's most dangerous tourist attractions; Some people will attempt to drive their rental cars from the unmarked gate to the wreck and sink deep into the lava field. Others will set out on foot and get stranded in a violent blizzard when the weather turns. And a few will simply wander through the barren, moon-like landscape for hours in search of this thing until they give up and call for help.
