Near Queenstown, Tasmania a track leads to a flooded cut called the Iron Blow, a now deserted open mine which began operating in 1883. First mined unsuccessfully for gold by prospectors in the early 1880s, miners recognized its potential for copper and subsequently the Iron Blow orebody was mined until 1929. Although making an effort to promote itself as a tourist destination, there is no escaping the fact that the deep eroded gullies and marked multicolored hills are a direct result of destructive mining practices that once took place here.
