Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety I captured this image a few years ago whilst working on a commission on the Farne Islands, a small group of islands off the North East coast of England. I had special permission to land early on Inner Farne and so I was able to spend time with the arctic terns before the boat loads of tourists and visitors arrived. This arctic tern colony is one of the most successful in the UK and the footpath to and from the boat runs straight through the heart of their colony. Hugely territorial the terns will attack anything and everything that passes through their territory and as such every visitor to the island is treated to the same noisy, and occasionally painful welcome. Working alongside and under the guidance of the islands’ warden I was able to move up through the colony and, as the only person on the footpath the photography was made easier as I was the sole target for their ire. As well as the occasional pecking they’ll also defecate on any intruder, or perceived intruder and by the end of the brief session I was pretty much covered in bird faeces. One particularly accurate bird even managed to defecate in my mouth which for anyone would be unpleasant but as I’d been vegetarian for 25 years the white, fishy liquid was particularly unwelcome! Whilst the birds might not appreciate the presence of people passing through their colony it is the presence of these very people that largely keeps away other predators and is probably a significant part of the reason why the colony is so successful. When capturing this image the light was still quite harsh and was creating unpleasant shadows on the underside of the birds and so to eliminate this I used a small bit of fill flash, balanced with the ambient light, and just enough to light its underbelly. This was also enough to reveal a small punctuation of colour in their red legs and gape.
