To offset lost mining jobs in central #Appalachia, officials, business leaders and environmentalists are working to create an entrepreneurial economy. One key goal: give young people a reason to stay. Across the region, inquisitive minds are thinking creatively about opportunities in tech, craft agriculture and energy efficiency. These initiatives won’t cure the economic woes people face in Appalachia. But, Lora Smith, who oversees grants for the Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation, said they represent lurching steps into what one local writer called “a terrifying liberation” for a region rich in natural resources and where people have deep ties to the land.
