Photo by @DavidDoubilet A de Havilland Beaver floatplane glides above Hook and Hardy reef on the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. The plane is an air-to-water taxi for snorkelers looking to explore the reef. The Great Barrier Reef is currently in the midst of a coral bleaching crisis due to elevated water temperatures that has caused the coral to expel their symbiotic algae. My partner Jennifer Hayes and are returning to the reef shortly to revisit areas that we have documented in 2010, 2005 and 1999 to determine the extent of change. At +/- 1400 miles long the Great Barrier Reef is the largest living thing on Earth visible from space. The reef system is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most widely recognized and iconic coral reef system on our planet.
