Photo by @FransLanting “Love Birds” Albatross courtship is an intimate affair. These birds live as long as we do and they mate for life. They’re dependent on the open ocean and on tiny specks of land where they come ashore to mate and raise their young. Today President Obama sets foot on Midway Atoll in the Hawaiian Leeward Islands, where he will announce the expansion of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument to 582,000 square miles of ocean surrounding the Leewards, making it the largest protected area in the world. The Leewards are the single most important place in the world for Pacific seabirds, which come there by the millions each year. It’s one of the most extraordinary places I’ve ever had the privilege to visit. Now the waters these seabirds depend upon for food will be safeguarded too. Mahalo, Obama!
