Video by @CarltonWard // While working on my @ナショナルジオグラフィック grant to tell the story of the Florida panther, I had the privilege of spending some time with one of the world's rarest flowers -- the ghost orchid. Approximately 2,000 ghost orchids survive in the swamps of South Florida, of which only ten percent produce a flower in any given year. The ephemeral blooms, often hanging above water from a pond apple or pop ash tree like this one, persist for little more than a week. I was using a camera trap to try to capture the even rarer event of a ghost orchid being pollinated, something that may happen to one in ten flowers. I did not succeed, this year. The flowers I was photographing have now withered and the season is passing, so I will have to wait until next summer to paddle back out into the swamps to try again.
