While most animals of the tropical rain forest rely on stealth and camouflage to survive, macaws are unabashedly gaudy. What’s more, they gleefully announce their presence with a tirade of grating, unmistakable squawks. I spent several weeks in southeastern Peru, where hundreds of macaws gather every morning to feed on patches of exposed clay, a natural antidote to toxic chemicals in the seeds and fruits they eat. These daily convocations of birds, in great wheeling clouds of screaming, kaleidoscopic color, are among the most spectacular natural events I’ve ever witnessed. #scarletmacaw #rainforest #tambopata #showingoff #flight #nikon
