Photo by @daviddoubilet A spinecheek clownfish peers from the safety of its host anemone in Papua New Guinea. The clownfish are immune to the toxins produced by the anemone and make their home in the dense forest of tentacles, safe from predators. The clownfish in turn protects the anemone from potential predators and parasites. Clownfish have complicated and unique sex lives called sequential hermaphroditism. The largest fish in the group is a reproducing female. If she dies the largest male will become the reproductive female. Anemones are normally rich in color. This anemone has lost its color producing algae during a warming event that causes stress.
