The #moon, a symbol of enlightenment and seen as the nexus between aesthetic and spiritual, was a favorite subject of painters, poets, and printmakers alike in Japan. The Japanese festival Otsukimi is an occasion to celebrate the autumn moon. Some traditional houses would have special decks or windows set into the roof of a room for moon viewing. It is also a time to enjoy seasonal food and drink with friends. Have you seen the moon tonight? “Autumn Moon at Seto (Seto shūgetsu)” from the series “Eight Views of Kanazawa (Kanazawa hakkei),” c. 1835–39 (Edo Period, 1615–1868), by Utagawa Hiroshige I
