We’re celebrating the Korean Harvest Moon Festival – Chuseok. The festival is observed on the full moon ? (the 15th day) of the 8th month of the lunar calendar, which in 2016 is 15 September. Similar celebrations also take place across Asia.

This work is by Seoul-born and now New York-based artist Ik-Joong Kang. It depicts a moon jar, one of the most iconic types of Korean porcelain vessel. Elegant simplicity made this type of jar popular in Korea during the 17th and 18th centuries. White, minimalist forms were desired and praised during the Joseon dynasty (1392–1910). It symbolised the ideals of purity and integrity.
In this contemporary work, Ik-Joong Kang has added a layer of white flowers mixed with images of fighter jets and attack helicopters. In the background, the 225 squares each contain an image of a seated Buddha.
