From the start of the Age of Exploration in the 15th century, European artists communicated the continent’s growing dominance on the world stage through idealized depictions of people in harmony with nature. #HansWertinger was among a group of northern Renaissance artists who painted landscapes for the backdrops of religious and secular compositions. These painters developed a common interest in the landscape of Danube River Valley, in present-day Germany, as a genre in its own right, and peopled their landscapes with biblical and contemporary figures.
