Portrait of a Sandagger Wrasse swimming through kelp in the waters off New Zealand’s Poor Knights Islands. This region is a marine reserve and was made fully no-take in the 1980s, meaning that it is completely protected. With this type of marine protection, ecosystems are able to heal from decades of overfishing and habitat destruction, becoming replenishment zones for surrounding areas. Most scientists believe that a minimum of 40% of the Earth’s oceans must be protected for the planet to remain healthy. Currently about 3% of the ocean is protected, with only 1% being fully no-take. The current goal of many countries and researchers is to achieve 10% by the year 2020.
