Sorry isn’t enough. The words are hollow when they don’t come with the deep self-reflection required to actually enact behavioral change. If you fail to understand why what you did or said was wrong, simply mouthing the words “sorry” just doesn’t count. If you say you’re sorry and then go on to attack, deflect or deny it invalidates any semblance of apology. What you say in off-the-cuff uncensored comments often reflects what you really feel deep down inside. You must be held accountable, especially when your voice is loud and clear in the public sphere. When you let your guard down and “tell it like it is” you are essentially laying bare the truth of what you actually feel, rather than what you have been told to feel.  _ What counts is having the courage to listen and understand how your actions, intended or not, have inflicted pain on someone else. What matters is the strength to endure long periods of genuine self-reflection and re-education. Healing happens when actions change and we see results. Forgiveness is grace, but it is not forgetfulness or carte blanche to keep acting the same way. We as a society must hold each other accountable. We, the citizens of the U.S.A., have a moral responsibility to uphold the basic truths of our constitution. Every citizen deserves to be treated equally, that is, that we all have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Every age, gender, color, creed, religion, ethnicity. Every single person. Our success is not greater than the suffering of one.  _ Call me names. Tell me to shut up and just do yoga. Whatever. Or stand with me and agree that we are better than this.
