#regram from @nytarchives | An airplane in every garage? Still not a thing. But in March 1952, when the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer Eddie Hausner captured an #Airphibian on the Grand Central Parkway in New York City, that was the idea. “The combination of automobile and airplane, once cartoonists's pipedreams, is now a tangible reality,” @ニューヨーク・タイムズ wrote earlier that month. The architect Robert E. Fulton Jr. built 4 Airphibians, which he flew and drove extensively. The flying ? — photographed here sans wings — could be converted into a ✈️ in 4 or 5 minutes. In the early 1950s, advocates thought it was a postwar necessity. It was the first flying car to be certified by the Civil Aeronautics Administration, the precursor to the @faa. But the Airphibian never really took flight, so to speak. Today, the only one that remains can be found in the @スミソニアン博物館 collection.
