The sequins on Dorothy's Ruby Slippers made back in the 1930s aren't like sequins you find today. "The slippers' sequins have a gelatin core with a cellulose nitrate coating, and it's that coating that gives the slippers their red color," says Dawn, our conservator. "Cellulose nitrate can be a very difficult material to display, store, and even conserve. There's light damage to the coating making them appear opaque and faded. With that in mind, we'll create a new display case that takes into account the light hitting the slippers and mitigates its effect. In addition, since cellulose nitrate and gelatin swell differently in the environment, the new case will also need to carefully regulate temperature and humidity." ??
