What do we mean when we say we’re “conserving” the Ruby Slippers?
Our goal isn’t to make them look brand new, but to prevent future damage and deterioration so they can stay on display at our @国立アメリカ歴史博物館 for years to come.
The shoes’ sequins have discolored, partly because of light, so we’ll research the dye and find out the best light to avoid fading. The same goes for research on the coating of the sequins. Conservators will also carefully attend to loose threads and the soles to prevent future loss of material.
There are more than 12 different materials that make up the Ruby Slippers, so our experts have to understand how each has changed over the last 80 years, what condition they’re in now and how to best treat them going forward.
