@melissafarlow | Limestone Tufa towers and spires rise 30 feet high in Mono Lake, an ancient lake over 1 million years old in the Sierra Nevadas. It is one of the oldest lakes in North America. It has no outlet and the carbonate minerals were exposed after water diversions began in 1941. Andrea Lawrence worked to place protections on Mono Lake Basin from being drained and today, the mono lake committee continues the mission.
Throughout its long existence, salts and minerals have washed into the lake from Eastern Sierra streams. Freshwater evaporating from the lake each year has left the salts and minerals behind so that the lake is now about 2 1/2 times as salty as the ocean and very alkaline. @natgeocreative @monolakecommittee #monolake #sieranevada #california
