Photo by @christianziegler on assignment for National Geographic. A Spix's guan (Penelope jacquacu) forages for figs in a fruiting tree. These large birds (up to 1.3 kg) are specialized frugivores – eating fruits high in the forest canopy – and so they play a critical role in dispersing the seeds of rain forest tree species. This picture is from an expedition to Cocha Cashu biological station in Manu National Park, Peru. Our aim was to document the amazing diversity of animals that visit a fruiting fig tree deep in the Peruvian Amazon. The story was just published at natgeo online. @natgeocreative @thephotosocity #manu #peru #cochacashu #fig #ecology
