Katsushika Hokusai was born #onthisday in 1760. One of most widely-known artists from Japan, Hokusai is considered a great master of ukiyo-e, pictures of the “floating world” that portray life in the developing urban culture of Japan during the Edo period (1615–1868). Hokusai’s imagery reflects the period’s Japanese fashions, lifestyles, and pursuits as well as the longstanding Japanese reverence for the natural world. "Fine Wind, Clear Day (Gaifū kaisei), also known as Red Fuji, from the series Thirty-six Views of Fuji (Fugaku sanjūrokkei)," c. 1831, by Katsushika Hokusai
