Trance ~ Hypnotic, a man performs the Kuda Lumping dance, a horse dance, originating from central Java during a Labuhan Dalem ceremony outside Yogjakarta, Indonesia, near the top of the active volcano, Mount Merapi.

From the Archive — This photograph, a man in deepest trance, was an outtake from my @ナショナルジオグラフィック story, Volcano Gods. While Mount Merapi was in a state of eruption in August 2006, the villagers who lived directly on this majestic yet equally deadly active volcano, held a rare ceremony known as Labuhan Dalem. It is believed by many that an ogre-like creature resides within this sacred volcano located in Central Java. When Gunung Merapi is actively erupting, such important events occur in hopes to appears the spirit, removing a threat to the tens of thousands who live along the slops of Merapi.
