Happy birthday to @catherinedlish! This photo was taken backstage at a show we performed at not long after we met around 2000. We were in London, before burlesque was as popular as now, and city officials came to approve our show. According to an old law, it was OK to be totally nude on stage but it was illegal to remove clothing in a "seductive manner". To get around this ordinance, we would go onstage together, taking turns slipping into the wings to take a piece off, then come back onstage just a little bit more naked. I have so many wonderful memories of our #burlesque adventures, and so much love, respect & admiration for her. I'm so grateful to have met her, and to still have her in my life. If there was anyone who I would consider a mentor for me, it's her. I'd been performing burlesque since the 90s, but when I met her, she inspired me to become a better performer & together we pushed the limits of what we dreamed burlesque could evolve to. I'll never forget the first ultra-extravagant costume she ever made for me, it was unlike anything anyone had ever seen in before, every millimeter covered with @Swarovski crystal, with THREE huge feather bustles. And then there was the time we bought a real mechanical bull from some cowboys in Texas and we strapped a giant lipstick to it for me to ride in the middle of a platform over a swimming pool. Many risks, trials and errors, but through our triumphs and even a few mishaps, I've never laughed so hard in my life. One of the things that I've always loved about having Catherine as my friend is that there's never been any need for competitiveness; she has a very distinctive sense of self and she and I have always maintained our individuality in the relationship. Her inner beauty, her wicked wit, and her generosity make her a compelling performer and a wonderful friend. Catherine's innovative ideas and costuming, prop designing, and feather fan-making have inspired designers and performers all over the world. She's incredibly imaginative, in fact, I don't think I've ever seen Catherine copy anything or anyone! I just wanted to take a moment and acknowledge and celebrate this wonderful person.
