Photograph by @paulnicklen // Two large adult bowhead whales sleep along the floe edge near Baffin Island, Nunavut. I was standing on the sea ice waiting for hours when these two leviathans of icy seas decided to show up and rest between feeding sessions. I wanted to get closer but the sound of my boots crunching on the sea ice was definitely going to scare them away. When I am diving under the ice, the sound of something walking above is incredibly loud. I took my boots off and walked in my sock feet as slowly as I could to get in position. After about half an hour of shooting this scene I realized that I could no longer feel my feet. I crept back to my boots and watched as they dove to continue feeding on calanus copepods under the sea ice.
