Photo by @FransLanting When you follow emperor penguins on their arduous journeys between their colonies at the edge of Antarctica and the open water where they forage, you get a good sense of how they navigate across the fractured icescapes of the Weddell Sea. There are no straight lines between colony and ocean. I marveled at the ability of this small party to find the best way across pressure ridges. Emperor penguins are uniquely dependent on sea ice. That’s where they raise their young. With the rapid melting of Antarctica’s ice, their future hangs in the balance. The new NatGeo Channel documentary about climate change by Leonardo DiCaprio, “Before the Flood," does a great job of summing up the issues and specifying solutions. You can watch it online or on the channel. Stay tuned for more news from the front lines of climate change.
