Photo by @shonephoto (Robbie Shone) - Gunung Mulu National Park in Malaysia, Borneo, hosts some of the largest caves in the world. Here a cave explorer admires a calcite formation known as The Elephant’s Trunk in Racer Cave. The formation would have started off as a tiny little ‘soda straw’, and has then grown to it’s present size over hundreds of thousands of years. The caves in Mulu are rich in such deposits because of the high rainfall and thick vegetation cover on the surface, both of which are important components for the deposition of calcite formations in caves.
