photo by @chamiltonjames / Charlie Hamilton James - Two young elephants inspect the carcass of a young male elephant that died yesterday in the Masai Mara, Kenya. It was a very sad moment to watch a whole herd of elephants approach the carcass to sniff it, be near it and perhaps mourn the loss of a family member. They seemed distressed and angrily chased any hyaenas away from the body, trumpeting and running at them. Rangers from the Anne K Taylor Fund suspect that the elephant had died from a poison tipped arrow. Poison arrows are overlooked in the ivory business but their use as lethal and silent weapons appears to be on the rise. The arrows are tipped with a poison made from the acokanthera tree, a common species throughout the Masai Mara and Kenya. The plant is boiled down and turned into a black latex that is pasted around the arrows just behind the tip. It is lethal and fast acting when it hits the blood stream.
