A few years ago, while photographing a piece on the life of Russian explorer Vitus Bering for the German edition of National Geographic Magazine (@ng_deutschland), my assistants and I traveled through the most remote sections of Bering Island. Its geography is so challenging that a Caterpillar vehicle generally is the only means of transportation to reach Bering’s grave near Commander Bay. Unexpectedly, we ran into one of the few families that inhabit this remote part of the island and who rarely experience visitors. They graciously invited us to participate in their picnic, which mostly consisted of fresh red caviar - a common nourishment for them but a feast for us.
