Photo and caption by @petekmuller. Shortly after daybreak my dog, Mosi, and I follow the Mathioya River with hopes of Rainbow Trout. With the short rains upon us, the mornings are damp and brisk. The river runs more swiftly at this time of year, drowning the sound of our footfalls on the banks. We move quickly, excited by the unfolding landscape. I begin to perspire in the cool air and am soon overcome by waves of nostalgia. I recall my childhood in New England and brisk, early starts for hikes in the White Mountains. Much time has passed since then but in these moments I feel very much the same. A few kilometers up, I test my fishing luck in a calm pool beside the rapids. Here, in the tight quarters of the Mathioya, one need not need attempt the dramatic casting for which fly fishing is renowned. Simply allowing the current to carry the fly is sufficient, I gather. Soon, Mosi grows impatient and crashes into the water behind me. Whatever fish may have gathered presumably disperse. Up to his shoulders in fast-flowing water, he huddles next to my leg, happily bracing against the current. We carry on. In the late morning, we reach the junction of the Mathioya's northern and southern flowing branches. On the banks—below fields of radiant green tea—two young boys wait as their cows drink from the river. They’re unusually quiet for boys of their age, and while I’m surely projecting, they almost appear to reflect on the scene while maintaining their watch of the cows. They wave to me but make no special fuss. They smile as Mosi passes. Rarely do they see such a large but friendly dog. I was grateful to spend Thanksgiving in this, my most favorite place in Kenya. This modest, peaceful valley leaves me feeling calmer, happier and more focused each time I visit. I can think of nowhere better to give thanks. #Kenya #Africa #serene #fishing #green #beauty #Travel #AberdaresCottages #River
