Larung Gar in Sichuan Province, China, is the world’s largest #Buddhist institute. Thousands of nuns and monks live and study in the red-painted dwellings spread over the walls of this remote Tibetan valley. Founded in 1980, the monastic camp has swelled for several decades, but more recently, chain saws, wielded by workers demolishing homes, have signaled its imminent end. The Chinese government is tightening control over the settlement, in what many Tibetans and their advocates call a severe blow to Tibetan religious practice. Interviews with residents at #LarungGar and reports from @humanrightswatch, Radio Free Asia and overseas pro-#Tibet groups indicate that Chinese officials intend to reduce the settlement’s population to 5,000 by late next year through mass evictions. Many Tibetans say they fear the erosion of their language, traditions and ways of worship. @gillessabrie photographed nuns on their way to a prayer hall while on #nytassignment in Larung Gar.
