Players cheered after the opening coin toss during high school football Friday in Marshall, Texas. 2 years ago, as fears over head injuries and the long-term consequences of collisions in #football intensified, Marshall — a town of 24,000 in the heart of football country — took the unlikely step of trying to roll back #tacklefootball. Since then prospective players have been steered toward other sports, generating a backlash among those who feel that the dangers of football have been exaggerated; that boys should be challenged, not coddled; and that football is a good way to challenge them. So last month, the sport made a comeback in the community, in the form of 2 new youth programs. The makeup of the teams reflects a socioeconomic undercurrent that has not gone unnoticed: Most of the players on the new tackle teams are African-American and come from communities where the sport is more often seen as a pathway to eventual prosperity. @brandonthibodeaux took this photo while on assignment for @nytimessports in Texas.
