Photo by @mclain.david // I spent weeks traveling across the ice by dogsled in Northwest Greenland with Inuit hunters. One of the first things you learn about ice in the arctic is that its always on the move. Its looks like Gideon is coaxing his sled dogs over a cliff but he’s actually making them go from the land to the sea ice at low tide. If we had arrived at this spot at high tide the ice below would have been even with the land. I live on the coast of Maine and deal with tides all the time but I had absolutely no idea a frozen ocean could rise and fall with the tides. In any case, it was clear the dogs did not want to go and neither did I. You learn pretty quickly to trust Inuit hunters with your life though. They are the most skilled and competent people I have ever spent time with in the outdoors. Like many people who face danger regularly, they also have an amazing sense of humor. #dogs #greenland #ice
