Looking somewhat like an alien, a Caribbean Reef Squid embryo develops within its egg casing. This image, made using photo microscopy, shows the tiny squid living off the yolk sac between its arms and tentacles. The dots covering the squid’s body are chromatophores and iridophores; the cells that allow squids to change color and form body patterns. Squid are kind of like the ‘James Dean of the Sea;’ they live fast and die young, with most species living no more than 12-18 months. Despite this fact, they are highly evolved and compete extremely well with other animals in the ocean.
Photographed on assignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック.
