#CarolBeckwith and #AngelaFisher have recorded traditional African culture and ceremonies over many decades. This photograph shows Surma men of South Sudan and southwestern Ethiopia assembled for wild stick fighting called the Donga. Now banned by the Ethiopian government, Donga stick fighting was considered one of the most fierce of all sports across the African continent. It was a sport for prooving masculinity, settling vendettas, and winning wives. Men came from many villages, often walking thirty miles, to participate in the tournament. #whoshotsports
