Here’s a hint that a bike race is going to be filled with unconventional obstacles: At the starting line, the official race helicopter hovers so close to the cyclists that the wind generated by its blades blows some of them over. Such was the case at La Ruta de Los Conquistadores, a 3-day bicycle race across Costa Rica. For those daring to compete, the unfamiliar jungle animals, jaguars included, are one kind of worry; sleep deprivation is another. One day, racers ate breakfast at 3:30 a.m. for a 5 a.m. start. But there was help: Villages and towns along the course throw La Ruta parties, where residents wield pots and pans to bang as the racers speed, roll or limp past. The photographer @scottymacphoto captured Christian González in a moment of exhausted bliss after completing the first leg of La Ruta.
