This story sheds light on the incredible assimilation of diverse religious groups all driven by the desire to share in a mutual respect that is not present in other countries.

A young woman’s face reflects the soft glow of candlelight as she prays and honors the legend of Saint George’s slaying of the dragon. Saint George, a 3rd century Saint from Palestine, is celebrated by Muslims and Christians alike. In Azerbaijan’s northern district bordering Georgia, the ancient Caucasian-Albanian Church accepts both Azerbaijani Muslims and Christian Georgians. These two very different religious communities come together as one to celebrate what they call the Kurmukoba festival. Most participants buy ten home-made beeswax candles and participate in a short pilgrimage up the steep hill to the church. Some of the candles are lit during the hike and are stuck to the side of the mountain. The remaining candles are lit inside the church; however, one may not enter the church until having circled around it three times, kissing its wall and praying at each of its four corners.
