Each year during "Fishing and Hunting Day" all over the Khanty-Mansiysk Region of Siberia, the Khanty participate in traditional events and competitions. The event attracts a few thousand Khanty and non-Khanty visitors who enjoy the fair along with outdoor dancing following the day’s competitions. Fight-on-a-log draws the biggest crowd, where contestants try to knock each other down with straw-filled sacks while straddling a log. The expansive modernization and economic growth generated by Russia’s oil and gas industry have been a blessing for most of the Khanty-Mansiysk region’s 1.5 million inhabitants, but not all. Roughly 30,000 indigenous people hailing from the area’s Khanty and Mansi tribes still populate the region, but their traditional way of life is quickly disappearing as ancestral lands are covered by oil fields and gas refineries.
