Pascal Serugendo and Christine Uwamahoro met at a 32-square-mile refugee camp in southwestern Uganda. After marrying, they began filling out the paperwork to resettle in the United States. The process took 4 years — and in the meantime, they had a son, Alfa Serugendo, and a daughter, Asante Zainbu. This September, the family arrived in Northern California with a small bag of summer clothes, the dream of a new life in America and little else. They also had pressing needs.
